I'm realizing that I have no idea which of my friends actually wear makeup. I tend to assume that none ever do, or perhaps a few do for special occasions only. But I could be way off base.
If it were there, I would have actually picked something like "I used to wear it regularly, but now I only wear it on rare occasions, like for a formal ball or something.(And I identify as a girl/woman.)" I think it was something I did more in high school, but now I realize that I like how I look without makeup. Also, I'm lazy. That's the reason I stopped wearing contacts regularly and made glasses my default.
My boss is a woman, the kind who wears snazzy clothes and great shoes, and of course wears makeup. She has told our team she prefers when we dress well, so we look professional etc, especially compared with other teams on our floor who don't make much effort. She even said she prefers us (the females of us) to wear makeup.
I rarely wear makeup these days. Too much of a hassle. But on Halloween, when I dressed up in my corset and all that for work, I wore a bit of makeup.
Of course my boss noticed it and commented that it looked good. I told her I don't usually wear makeup because my boyfriend doesn't like it.
Which is true. Alex hates it when I wear makeup. He won't kiss me if I'm wearing lipstick. If I'm wearing eye makeup he says I look like a 15 year old whore.
Why? Because when I'm wearing makeup I don't look like ME. He says. But that's silly, because I'm always me. And I like wearing makeup sometimes. It makes me feel prettier.
Think of my sisters, though- Carissa never wears makeup at all, and Tina pretty much puts her face on in the morning. I like being in the middle ground.
I was looking for something between "Never" (which implies an ideological stance) and "Less than once a week" (which implies, to me, more often than the once or twice a year I consider a special enough occasion to bother).
Also, is there a gender identity sensitivity reason to say girl/women rather than female and boy/guy/man rather than male? I'm not as aware of these issues as I should be.
My understanding is that "female", etc, refer to genetalia, or some other biological characteristic(s) (i.e. "sex", if you're into the sex/gender distinction); and those other terms refer to "gender", i.e. how someone socially presents themself.
I appreciate this explanation, but I don't think I agree. I would use "male" and "female" to refer to either sex or gender. When I want to clarify what I mean by a male-to-female transgendered person, for example, I might say "someone who is sexed male and gendered female." Which is to say that I think "identify as male" is clearly about gender and not sex, and means almost the same thing as "identify as a boy/guy/man" (but not quite, because if I recall correctly there are lesbian subcultures that have female boys, and I have at least one vaguely genderqueer female friend who refers to herself as a guy).
I replied assuming that by makeup you meant lipstick/eye shadow/blush/mascara/etc. i.e. things that are visible and make you look different. I use powder foundation almost every day just to cover up blemishes and such, but I don't really consider that makeup since it's not visible (it just hides stuff instead).
Yeah, I don't really consider my lip balms "makeup," even the ones that alter my lip color, because I'm using them primarily to keep my lips from getting chapped. (And none of my lip balms alter my lip color more significantly than me looking like I've just had a nice scoop of chocolate ice cream.) If I did, I'd have to say that I wore makeup every day, though.
When I was high school aged, a friend asked me where she could get makeup like the kind that I was wearing, because we had similar coloring and "it looks s natural." I had a hard time keeping a straight face as I told her that it WAS natural.
I do wear makeup sometimes, but more to play dress-up than for reals. Like sometimes on Friday nights. You know. Maybe it counts as theater? I'm not playing a part for an audience though, I'm just plain playing.
I put more than once a week but I was counting foundation---most work days Iwear foundation but nothing else. More isn't worth the effort and eye makeup just itches. I do go "all out" for parent conferences though.
I make it a point to keep a black eyeliner pencil on hand in case I need to have some kind of formal pictures or theatrical performance or what-have-you, Just In Case, but I'd honestly have to dig to find it. I count this as 'never'.
Although, I will say that recently makeup is only of the foundational/touch-up/concealer nature, and generally correlates to making presentations or performing - or some other venue where I'm going to have my photo taken.
I don't think I've worn colorful makeup since high school.
