My secret hope is that Elena Kagan is confirmed to the Supreme Court and then immediately comes out of the closet as gay.

By the way, if you type "Elena Kagan" (no quotes) into Google and don't press enter, the first 5 suggestions for searches are "Elena Kagan husband", "Elena Kagan married", "Elena Kagan bio", "Elena Kagan solicitor general", and "Elena Kagan personal life". One of these things is not like the others...

(And for the record, she does not seem to be married, unsubstantiated rumors say she has a female partner, and a white house official denied that she's a lesbian, according to the Washington Post.)

So yes, she sets of my gaydar. Loudly. But seriously, there are semi-butch straight women all over the place, just look at Janet Reno. I feel bad for straight women who just happen to be tomboyish or powerful or have short hair and therefore get stereotyped as gay - not because gay is an insult but because they don't get to be seen for who they are. Ditto the feminine queer women like my partner who will never be taken seriously as queer. All that said, if she is in fact gay, it would indeed be fabulous if she came out after confirmation. It would be so cool to have the 4th (?) woman supreme court justice be a Jewish dyke! What do you know about her politics? I don't know anything, really. Off to google her...

the alliance for justice just put out a statement saying they support her

She totally is. She kinda looks like Jon Lovitz, just a little if you squint.

bwahaha... you're right about that

Here I thought I was being so creative because I was going to say "That's a woman? It looks more like Jon Lovitz in drag..." But you stole my thunder! Damn you!

Really? I don't want to see the PR spin the Republicans would put on about how Kagan and the Whitehouse lied to the American people.

If she is a lesbian, I would rather see her come out of the closet now and let the 9 Republicans who voted for her for solicitor general jump through hoops trying to explain why they won't vote for her now without mentioning her sexuality.

Forget the "scandal" if she's a lesbian - I'd bet a whole big lot that she's male-to-female transgendered.

Wow.

Part of me agrees with you.

And part of me wishes that we lived in a society where it wouldn't've even been an issue for discussion. Silly, idealistic me.

Good for you for rooting for the cause, and all, but, I kinda have a problem with the fact that it matters at all. I'm really disappointed with our society that "husband", "married", and "personal life" to all show up above "supreme court", regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Why does it matter?

My secret hope is that Justice Kagan will refute some of the opinions expressed by Solicitor General Kagan (i.e., those that would enshrine a number of Bush-era innovations in the area of civil liberties. I mean, we didn't elect Obama so that he could put a lady Alberto Gonzales on the Supreme Court, right?).
