Fandom has morphed over the years. Used to be if you went to sci-fi cons you were part of this super fandom that encompassed everything. Then, when more and more people got into self publishing strange comics like Albedo, Those Annoying Post Bros and so on, just knowing of their existance implied you were part of some sort of fandom. That's when fandom just seemed to split apart into a million fragments of madness to use a quote from one of my favorite fictional mad scientists.
There are some that say that fandom is only media (tv/movie/book) based. Others who would say that anything of which you're a fan (musician/sports team/knitting/whatev) qualifies as a "fandom"
Puristically, I suppose that it can't be a fandom unless there's more than one person in it, but by the same token, most fandom-oriented people participated in fannish activities well before they knew what they were doing (I wrote "Who's the Boss" fanfic in my diary in junior high well before I had any idea of what fanfic was)
I refuse to call myself a member of the Philadelphia Eagles fandom. Though it would amuse me highly if the term caught on among Eagles fans. And I'd probably laugh non-stop for hours if I found some fan fiction writers earnestly focused on Philadelphia professional sports teams. (I mean, other than this.)
Mind you, I only ever watch two shows: Deal or No Deal and House. I watch DoND live when I can and forget it when I can't; House gets downloaded since we're not home when it's actually on and we don't have a VCR.
Otherwise, the TV is pretty well never turned on, at least by me :)
I record shows I like and watch them when I feel like watching TV because I can't be bothered to remember to watch tv shows for the most part.
Question #2
10-15 years ago, I watched a little tv but was much busier than I am right now. However i still couldn't be bothered to remember when something was on. I was never an ohh its Thursday must watch .... I mean I knew that friends was on on thursday which I watch the last year it was on and that Buffy was on tuesdays although I never actually watched it. I am not a slave to my tv
Question #3
Still can't be bothered to pay attention but the recording technology is better. then it was 10 years ago. Even before DVRs tv-vcr combos have good programing capability. The Key is to get something that will record when you tell it AND change the channel
Question #4
All I know is that on of my best friends provides info on Gilmore girls that she reads from reliable sources on the internet.
Addendum
Today you can also rent tv shows or download them. I especially like doing that because I prefer shows that are on every day. Those shows, if they are any good, are usually several seasons old if still on the air. Like these days I watch the original CSI and home improvement. I never saw either before I moved to NC. Now I am kind of interested in seeing them in order. You miss some of the subplot when you don't know where the story comes into play.

I honestly don't know where my roommate gets it from. I think maybe thepiratebay.org but don't quote me on that.
Don't find your options good enough...

There are some shows that I prefer not to miss, but if I've got something better to do (going out, doing work, etc.) then I'll miss them.
