Okay, Outlook Express is buggy (though I actually love the whole UI; it's exactly the right amount of stuff), Outlook is absurdly bloated, Eudora is weird, Opera mail is even weirder, and I refuse to use Thunderbird until they fix this. So what should I use?

Also, I've decided to rip all of my CDs to my hard drive.

You should use "Mail.app". ;-)

Actually, you should probably go with Thunderbird, even though they don't have a "Received Mail" option yet. I mean, if that's your only gripe, you're grasping at straws here. Just suck it up!

Much as I hate to agree with this pufta, if one minor bug is your only gripe, I would just go with thunderbird. It will get fixed... or you could set a filter to move all read mail to a subfolder, and then you'll have all your unread in inbox, and all read mail in a subfolder.

Also, Outlook express is horrible. Don't use it. Ever. In fact, make sure your account info isn't entered. Just in case it starts for whatever reason.

If you get office 2k3, I rather like outlook 2003. It's good. Also, I second what someone said below. Gmail rocks. Use it. Love it.

You know they have another category called "order received." I don't like it, but it seems like you might. At least for new mail.

I still don't know why it's such a big deal. 99% of the time, DATE works for me. If you receive spam that is mis-dated, well, it's spam. If a friend sends something that is mis-dated, kindly inform them to change their computer clock. I'd like them to fix that bug, but it's not like it's killing babies or something horrible.

the subfolder thing helps for reading it when it comes in, it doesn't help with the searching later on... Have you tried it? How often does that really happen? I'm pretty sure yahoo mail does the same thing because every now and then I get new mail that shows up really far down my inbox. Most of the time that it happens, it's spam. In fact... every time it has happened so far it has been spam.

As for OE, how exactly do you plan to work around the security problems? It's the most insecure client available. some retarded percent of viruses (somewhere around 75% I think) are written to exploit vulnerabilities in it. It's a POS. Seriously, you should check your e-mail by telnetting into the pop server before you even consider OE. It's that bad.

I use Outlook Express. It's the only mail client I've tried that has a simple interface and is fast. I tried Thunderbird for a while when I switched from IE to Firefox, but Thunderbird was too buggy and took up way too much of my computer resources. It made everything really slow for me.

Go with mail on the command line you lUsEr.

Dude! My first job was with Fortran. I remember the old days! And I'm damned glad they're the old days.

My userpic is from a really bad Italian movie from the late 1960s by the name of Diabolik. Gawd, I wonder how much they paid the actor to paint that suit on him. The comic they adapted it from is cool, though. Kinda a Batman with better fashion sense and stronger libido(he's Italian after all).

My dad's a programmer, and he specifically said to me, "Don't use outlook."
He uses Eudora.
I just say, "screw it all, forward all your email to GMAIL!" ;)

PS. If you don't have gmail, and want it, tell me. I really think it's the best :]

Er, he says don't use outlook because it passes on a lot of viruses. And icky stuff like that.

Some things you can't get around. For example, months ago there was an exploit going around that would cause OE to download a virus based on html code that was hidden in the message. All you had to do was view the message in html, and wham! And you wouldn't see anything in the message that would indicate that this code was there, because it didn't code for anything visible. You'd have to view the message source to be able to see it.

I believe that exploit is fixed now, but you never know what the next thing will be. You basically have to view all messages in plain text to be safe in OE. And who knows, maybe tomorrow that won't be true!

I use Opera mail, actually. It took a bit of getting used to, but I really like it now. Prior to that I used Outlook Express, Eudora, and (holy crap) Juno. Heh. I liked Eudora the best out of that group.

Gmail is neat too, but I prefer to use it pop style. It saves all my email on the server too, though, so when I'm out I can check my email while it's still downloading it all here. It's fab. :)

In Opera? They might be listed under "filters" since that's the equivalent of user-defined folders. In the mail read view, you can click on the folder name at the top, which opens a menu, then scroll down to filters and see if they're there. Otherwise, you can look through ont he sidebar hotlist thing (f4 will bring that up if you don't have it up all the time).

No idea if I'm helping or not, but. :)

IT'S ALL ABOUT USING PINE! OR MUTT! OR YOU COULD EVEN ABANDON ALL SENSIBILITY AND USE EMACS!

Just curious

How many emails do you get that are dated incorrectly, which aren't spam?
