MacBooks just showed up on Apple's online store in the refurbished section. About $1350 for the cheap one, the warranty, and a RAM upgrade from Newegg. So tempting...

EDIT: Mac owners, how necessary is the AppleCare warranty?

I got a MacBook about a month ago and I've been quite happy with it. I haven't found that it's gotten too hot, but I think it does get a little warmer than my old iBook. I have encountered the mooing problem, but it is only noticeable when I'm using the microphone to record things. Yeah, it is kind of annoying. One thing you might want to keep in mind is that MacBooks do not have good graphics cards. I haven't encountered any problems, but I haven't tried to run any graphics-heavy programs yet. Still, if you're going to be playing games or doing lots of video editing, you might want to reconsider getting a MacBook. It seems to blaze through everything else, though.

Definitely get AppleCare. I had repeated problems with my iBook's screen--it had to be replaced twice, which was totally free under AppleCare. Actually, if I hadn't had such good experience with AppleCare (it saved me well over $1,000 and the service was extremely prompt), I would not have been willing to risk the potential problems associated with a first-generation machine.
