Heh. I hear Toronto's beautiful in the summer. However, at this point I still like this country more than a Toronto winter. We'll see how long that lasts, though...
Well, there goes the neighborhood. I saw this at work today, and my co-workers and I were commiserating over the state of the union. I mean, it's one thing to have the Executive branch be firmly conservative, and quite another to have one and a little over a half of the legislature be conservative... but it's QUITE another to lose the balance of the Supreme Court. I can only hope that the Senate Dems can filibuster their way into the 2006 election, so we can regain at least one half of Congress and prevent the situation from getting any worse.
Or maybe Buch will do something stupid on his part and pick as her replacement a Justice Blackmun-type of conservative. Or perhaps he'll accidentally pick a "means" conservative rather than an "ends" conservative. Cross your fingers, everyone!
There are a lot of good ways for this to turn out. And then there's the possibility of a Clarence Thomas Junior. I'm not totally despondent yet, but I'm much less optimistic than I was before this news came down...
It means the whole shithouse is about to go up in flames. Bush will try to jam an ueber-conservative judge through, the Democrats will stonewall, and nothing will get done except for a lot of yelling.
Actually, from what I've heard lately, Kennedy would apparently join with Souter, Breyer, Stevens, and Ginsburg in upholding Roe. So we don't have to worry about the big one yet; just all the little ones...

If I weren't trying to erase all English swear words from my vocabulary, I could add quite a few other choice words to that list.
She wasn't my favorite, but she seemed pretty reasonable and moderate.
Maybe it's a, uh, July Fools' joke???
