I'm starting to worry some about my hard drive. Does anyone have a copy of Norton Ghost that they're willing to sell or share with me? Or know how I can get one any other way? (Note to LJ Abuse Team: I am not soliciting illegal materials don't hurt me.) Or know of any other good backup utilities like that? Let me know. Thanks.

And speaking of ghosts, everyone kept calling Michael Vick that all last week. "How do you catch a ghost?", they'd say. Well, you catch a ghost by scaring it, apparently. Did you see Burgess's second sack, that open-field beauty? You could just smell the fear coming from Vick. That was the moment the game ended, if you ask me.

(Yeah, if you don't like football, you might not want to read my journal for the next two weeks or so.)

I think I have norton Ghost somewhere. Frankly, if you haven't reinstalled windows in a while, it might not be a bad idea to just backup your data and start from scratch. What media are you backing up to anyway? You could also just boot up with a knoppix CD and use any number of good backup software for linux (all free). Or just Rsync stuff to a remote server. Bleh. babbling.

Man... we kicked vick around yesterday! it was awesome. I really think vick is completely overrated right now. Everytime we've played him, we have had no problem containing his running, and we pressure him enough that he makes dumb throws to well covered recievers. Also, he makes terrible decisions about throwing, and can't read defenses well. Maybe in a few years he'll be better. Right now, not even a top 5 QB. Mmmm... super bowl...

I know, you're all about reinstalling windows. My problem is that I have such ridiculous amounts of data, all disorganized, that it would take me forever to make sure I have everything important. Plus, I intend to get a new computer within the next few months. So it's not really worth it. I definitely want to borrow Ghost from you. (I don't even need knoppix, because I have an ancient Red Hat partition on there, but I don't want to go that route because I know and trust Ghost.)

I think Vick's going to be great one day. Like, soon. He's just not quite there yet. And he needs recievers. And if I'm wrong, and he's never going to be great, then the Falcons should sign Kordell Stewart, put them both back there at once, and reinvent the Single Wing...

And the reason I'm all about reinstalling windows is that windows needs it. THat's why you should always keep all your data on secondary partitions. I wish windows wasn't such shit. It shouldn't be so hard ro save all your data when reinstalling. If it was like linux, where all your data was stored in your home directory, seperate from application data and settings and things, then you could just put all home directories on a seperate partition, and reinstall around your data.... grrr. Windows is so poor concieved in some ways.

To be fair though, my installation of winXP on my desktop has lasted me years and is still going strong. Though I'd probably see a speed up if I did reinstall... and it's not that I can't put my vital information in a separate partition with little effort (I could probably get the operation done from start to finish in 1.5 hours max, including installation time for windows and all of my programs)... I'm just lazy.

And I use my laptop now so I don't care what my desktop does.

Yeah, only in some ways... Windows XP Pro is far and away better than any of their previous efforts, and while it's far from perfect, it's a damn good OS. XP Home sucks ass though.

There is still no perfect OS out there, and XP is in many ways better than linux or OS X. Of course, in many ways, linux or OS X are both better than XP Pro. Bleh. Computers are eeeeevil.

i've got two questions:
1) can you tell me any nice facts about mac OS X--why it's touted as being so good?
and 2) my favourite tshirt has a picture on it of jerry rice...he's a reciever, right? what does that mean? does he still play? any impressive stories or facts i should know so that i don't sound silly for liking my shirt "just because?"

Jerry Rice is a reciever, yes. He spent most of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, though he had a couple of years with the Oakland Raiders and currently plays for the Seattle Seahawks. He's not great now, but at the peak of his career (say 1986-1996) he was the best ever. Wait, that's not saying enough. Try this: He and Wayne Gretsky are the only two professional North American athletes ever to be so far ahead of the all-time competition at what they did. Rice is the best reciever of all time, and no one else is anywhere close.

i just read your comment out loud to katherine, but she (unlike me) is not impressed.

is a rewrite of the MacOS on a BSD (read *nix, unix) core. So:
- It is stable and fast, unlike 8 or 9
- It is shiny and Macish
- It runs most of the expected *nix programs
- It also has developers who write Mac code, ranging from toys up through Final Cut Pro

Well, I still buy Apple hardware. With IBM gone, they seem to be the dependable laptop vendor, and in the laptop market they have not been appreciably more expensive for a while. For that, I cope with one mouse button under an OS that wants three.

That's a good point. For someone who wants to run *n*x or is OS-agnostic, and wants a laptop, I would agree that OSX is the way to go. Though I would still like more proof that Dell laptops are as bad as some people have told me they are. Ditto Toshiba.

IBM isn't gone... they sold to Lenovo, who promply hired IBM to run the division for them. For at least the next few years, IBM will still be IBM, just owned by lenovo. Also, it now looks liek the FTC might block the sale of IBM to lenovo. Still, IBM and Apple are definitely the cream of the laptop crop.

Also, while you're stuck on the trackpad, you can definitely connect a multi button mouse to a mac machine.
