Wow, a lot of bad timing this season. (Including this Saturday, when I'd usually be upset that I have to choose between 2 of my 3 or 4 favorite acts, but instead I'm just upset that I might be too tired to go to either.) But there are still a couple of shows I'll probably go to. Who's in?

Folk-fest wise, what are you doing for volunteer stuff? I haven't sent my stuff in (I know, DO IT) because I don't know what shifts are good or whatever.

So which committee do you want to be on? I have connections for food (um, same connections as you would), volunteers, production or lighting, and society sales. And then there are the big ones of security, camping, and parking (of which security sucks less than the others) that are easy to get on. What appeals to you?

And then generally, the best route is to volunteer on the website if you want a big committee, or get in touch with your connection (DO IT) if you want a smaller one.

I'm doing Food, and hoping to do trucks (food subcommittee) with Jeff.

i'm interested in philly folk fest- i've heard this volunteering thing gets one free admission- how does this work?

So it's not quite free. It's $40 for full admission if you volunteer (volunteer fees plus mandatory Folksong Society membership), as opposed to $145-$180 if you don't. You sign up for a volunteer committee and work about 16 total hours over about 4 total shifts, usually at random times over which you don't have tons of control (though between Thursday and Sunday), and you have the rest of the time free. They also give you 2 meals a day for free if you volunteer, though if your dietary rules are what I think they are, that's mostly irrelevant for you. You'd probably have to bring food.

Shabbat used to be easy, but after a very painful restructuring of my volunteer committee 2 years ago (I still get upset thinking about it), it's now a bit harder. (My old committee had most of its work between the Monday before and the Friday of Fest, so it was easy to just do shifts beforehand.) I can look into getting you onto my new committee (food prep for the aforementioned 2 free volunteer meals) and figuring out Shabbat with them, but first I want to assure my own place on the committee first...

So there are 20-30 committees total. The big ones, and therefore the easy ones to get on, are security, parking, and camping security. Several others include CD/t-shirt sales, main gate, ticket sales, lighting/production, supplies/purchasing, communications (phone and network), and so on. But they're more or less difficult to get onto depending on how big they are, how popular they are, and who you know.

Oooh, I just thought of something. Do you have EMT/paramedic training? There's a medical committee.

Yay, TFIA! Maybe I'll head up to PA for that weekend -- I finish up grad school for the summer that Friday, so it's good timing.

Good timing indeed! Just like 2 years ago I might be coming north from DC before the concert, so might not be able to get dinner beforehand, but maybe we can find some time to hang out anyway. Keep me posted.

Yeah, and getting there also sucks when you're in a rush and the El decides to be ssslllllooooowwwww (and when you can't leave earlier, in this case because of Shabbat). But I still might go....
