August of Awesomeness, version 7

Like any good monthly periodical, my August of Awesomeness this year came out early, in mid-July.

Friday, July 18th through Sunday, July 20th: KZ/TLS exchange in DC
Tuesday, July 22nd: Rachel and Seth move to Philly
Friday, July 25th through Sunday, July 27th: Falcon Ridge Folk Festival
Monday, July 28th: Last Frisbee game of the summer
Saturday, August 2nd: KBH goodbye party
Sunday, August 3rd: Eileen Ivers concert? Stepbrother's birthday party?
Monday, August 11th through Sunday, August 17th: Havurah Institute
Sunday, August 17th: Philly Folk Fest (almost definitely going that day, it looks like)
Monday, August 18th: Sleeping a lot
Week of Monday, August 18th: Maxine in town
Tuesday, August 19th: Back to work at the best job I've ever had, which I'm still not taking for granted
Wednesday, August 20th: Phillyhenge
Sunday, August 24th: Day trip to the beach.

so the real question is when (if ever) does this phenomenon occur in a neighborhood where streets are skewed almost 45 degrees from the grid in the rest of the city?

I think it depends on your latitude, if it can happen at all. You need to use a sunrise/sunset table/calculator, together with a sun azimuth (angular position) calculator, to figure it out.

Sadly, at our latitude, you can't seem to get more than 31 degrees off of true east/west at sunrise or sunset. Shame. It seems that you have to have a latitude higher than 55 degrees (either north or south) to have any -henge in a 45-degree city.

It looks as though mt. airy's skew isn't quite 45% in one direction and the sun these days gets as far as 40% off the horizontal... if someone can figure out the actual skew of mt airy it might just work

when you say percent do you mean degrees?
as best I can tell (with an PDF protractor that advises against using it on screen), mt. airy is ~39.5 degrees off of true e/w. i'm inclined to trust desh's research over yours...

there's no need to go trusting anyone more than anyone else. he never looked up mt airy's skew. so if it's less than 40 degrees off, then there should be sometime pretty close to now that it lines up. go look up an azmiuth calculator if you don't believe me.

The azimuth might get as extreme as 40 degrees, but not at sunrise or sunset. Apparently the term for "azimuth at sunrise or sunset" is called "amplitude", so Googling for a sun amplitude calculator saves a step over Googling sunrise tables and "sun azimuth calculator". But the amplitude calculator I found recorded a miximum of 31 degrees off (sunrises at 59 degrees and 121 degrees from north) on Dec 21 and June 21 at 40° north latitude.

I still think Mt Airy is out of luck.

Oh I see you're right. I got confused because this azimuth table started before sunrise.
