Workshop description

I'm planning to offer this worksop at the 2008 Havurah Institute:

Dror Yikra vs. Yah Ribon

Dror Yikra ("Shout Proclaim Freedom") is a Hebrew song popularly sung to many varied tunes around Shabbat tables every week. Yah Ribon ("G-d, Master") is an Aramaic song popularly sung to many varied tunes around Shabbat tables every week. Some people say that no Shabbat song has more possible melodies than Yah Ribon. Others counter that Dror Yikra has more. Come help us settle this ongoing feud once and for all in a structured teaching and sing-off. Bring your favorite tunes and your audio recorder, or just bring yourself and your voice!

[desh] was an Everett Fellow at the 2002 Institute, and has taken 6 years to offer his first NHC workshop. He doesn't have the best musical memory around, but loves trying to learn new tunes anyway.


You should come to Institute, and come to the workshop!!

I've always translated Dror Yikra as "liberty [will be] proclaimed". For obvious reasons. :-)

My Hebrew's awful enough that I just asked a friend what it means and went with that. But I like your translation too!

Yeah I'm not a fan of the word "Liberty" outside of Liberty Bell and Statue of Liberty. I think "freedom" is more homey.

Um, yeah. I mean, they're clearly "freedom fries," not "liberty fries!"

"Proclaim" or "Declare", however are better words for "yirka" here in context.
