Madeleine L'Engle has died.

I've only read 4 or 5 of her books. I only liked 3. But wow, wow, what a 3.

How sad.

Yes, I just read that too -- really sad news. The Murray books, especially, were so amazingly good.

Wow, that's sad...I literally just read the Wrinkle in Time series (4 books), like last month. I had read "A Wrinkle in Time" as a kid, but I re-read it, plus I read the other 3 which I had never read before. I really liked the 3rd and 4th books, better than the first two.

Which order do you consider them in? I think of Many Waters as the 4th, but some think of it as the 3rd.

And that was the one of the 4 that I read and didn't like. But I was much younger then. It's definitely worth giving it another shot, and now's as good a time as any.

"Many Waters" is the 4th, assuming that the box set I bought put them in the right order...it certainly has a later copyright date than "A Swiftly Tilting Planet" (the 3rd one).

I really liked Many Waters (and A Swiftly Tilting Planet). Both seemed to be written for slightly older people. I honestly didn't like A Wrinkle in Time as much when I read it now as I did when I read it as a kid. I think it was slightly too young for me.

Oh yeah, and probably the reason why some people think Many Waters is the 3rd book is because what happens in the story happens before the story of A Swiftly Tilting Planet. So, chronologically based on the stories, Many Waters is 3rd, but chronologically based on when they were written, it's the 4th.

Kind of like the Narnia series...most of the box sets I see now rearrange the books to put them in chronological order based on the stories (and "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" is no longer the first book!).

I'm curious as to which ones you've liked. . . My ultimate favorite remains Many Waters, but I've read 9 or 10 of hers.

I liked the first three (as written) of the Time Trilogy/Quartet/Quintet/whatever. I clearly have to reread Many Waters, the only book of hers I'm sure I read and disliked.

in grade 5 we had to write a letter to our favourite author; i wrote to her. i was the only kid in my class that got a response, and it was not a form letter -- she actually wrote back, and sent photos of herself with her family. not studio photos, just snapshots. it was really thoughtful and kind of her.

I liked Many Waters alright, but I like the others -- Wrinkle in Time, Wind in the Door, and Swiftly Tilting Planet better.

I also really liked "A House like a Lotus"-- that might be one of my favorite young adult books. It's gotten better upon rereading.

"A Swiftly Tilting Planet" is one of the most important books of my life.
