I've noticed that a lot of people started off on LJ making an account just to comment on their friends' posts, not intending to ever write anything of their own.
Actually, in my case a writing critique group I belonged to was thinking of using LJ as a quick and dirty way to disseminate our work to one and other. The problem was that I was the only one who knew enough html to take full advantage of the medium back around 2000 or was it 2001. Sometime around then. Since then, I've been using it as a sort of an ongoing speed reading exercise. I'm constantly amazed at how many people read my drivel.
My exact reason is sorta in the cracks. While my GF was in Ireland, she was keeping people up-to-date via LJ posts, some of which were friendslocked. I originally got my account to save her having to rewrite those posts in email to me. I think it was months, perhaps even a year, before I found people I knew on LJ, rather than friending her friends who wanted to meet me. ;)
Actually, I totally lied on my poll - I didn't know anyone real life on LiveJournal. I totally made one to comment on Rabi and try out obscure and/or different sorts of writing in Friends-Only capacity away from CK.
I made mine because I didn't want to clutter up my weblog with stupid memes, but I still wanted to DO the stupid memes. and then I kept it because I liked the privacy / friendslocking options.
Because everyone else in my X-Files IRC channel was doing it. I was actually a relative latecomer, since I'd just graduated and was sans internet for about a month! *G*
I actually started on UJ, and posted both places for about 8 months before UJ shut down so my friends who only had LJs wouldn't have to get a separate account.
i got it solely so i could read the LJs of online friends. i didn't even like LJ at first; i felt about it much like i now feel about myspace. ha. i made a deadjournal first in protest.
but that sorta thing never keeps me for long from something that could be useful for staying in touch with people. i am stubborn, but not so much that i'd cut off my nose to spite my face.

(Also, you can fill out the poll again if you like.)
