You may now call me "Your Honor".

I just received a xeroxed blue certificate in the mail:

2005

City and County of Philadelphia

DEMOCRATIC PARTY Philadelphia, November 8, 2005

Josh [my last name]

At an Election held November 8, 2005, you were duly elected for a term of Four Years from January 1, 2006 as Judge of Election for the [number] Ward, [number] Division.

Margaret M. Tartaglione, Chairwoman
Edgar A. Howard, Commissioner
Joseph J. Duda, Commissioner

(I still don't know whether I get paid, though. Or, um, what I have to do.)

Is this because you wrote your name in or something?

[identity profile] lord-emo.livejournal.com 2005-12-06 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Things may be somewhat different in Philly. This is all I found (in the ten minutes I don't have before Gratz): http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:www.seventy.org/electioninfo/05elections/novelection/FAQNov2005.html (the main page just says "Service Unavailable."

Go you, you public servant, you!

Based on this non-profit organization's website, it looks like you'll be receiving training from your local Board of Elections on how to run a fair and organized polling station -- nifty! And it also appears that you will receive some sort of pay: "Finally, election board officials receive monetary compensation for their time."

[identity profile] ag5j.livejournal.com 2005-12-07 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I say you start off by establishing the official past time of philadelphia as pull my finger, and go from there

[identity profile] sen-ichi-rei.livejournal.com 2005-12-07 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Don't you need a law degree to be a judge?

[identity profile] jdcohen.livejournal.com 2005-12-07 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least ONE of us knows what the Judge of Elections does. Basically, you keep things running smoothly at the polling station and you make sure that the partisans outside the door keep their distance from the actual voting area and don't harrass the voters themselves (I don't know exactly what powers you have to exercise, but I'm pretty sure you can order people around if they're disobeying the law). Anyway, just ask the City Commissioner if you need more info.

that's pretty funny. good going! wonder what the 'monetary compensation' is...

[identity profile] conana.livejournal.com 2005-12-07 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations. I wholeheartedly endorse writing in people one likes for blank or uncontested positions, but actually getting elected that way is even better.

[identity profile] arcati.livejournal.com 2005-12-07 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This is probably the most hilarious thing I will read today. I can't believe that write-ins work! Congrats! Hmmm...now I know someone in government:)

[identity profile] flyinbutrs.livejournal.com 2005-12-07 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats!

You are officially my hero.
