more bad news

Rehnquist just died.

The only good thing here is that it increases the chances of Glenn Close and William Fichtner being appointed to the two vacant seats.

ETA: Though seriously, I can't see how this is really that bad. We knew he wasn't going to last until the next Democratic president, and it will be hard for Bush to nominate someone further to the right than Rehnquist. And it doesn't really matter who becomes Chief Justice, as that role doesn't seen to convey any additional power. I'm still more worried about the shift to the right from O'Connor to Roberts than whatever will result from Rehnquist's seat.

Can you send Josh Lyman to my house so he can explain it to me?

"explain" it to you?

do you really need me to explain to you why that isn't going to happen?

No, it's really not cause for panic. Anyone who has been paying any attention knew that this was going to happen soon, and that appointing a new justice isn't very likely to take all our abortions away or whatever. People are so riled up they can't seem to stop moaning that the world is ending. There's six "OMG WE'RE ALL SCREWED"-esque posts on my friends page so far, heh.
