Why is everyone's timing so bad? They Might Be Giants played at the TLA on Sukkot, Natalie MacMaster is playing at Penn on Pesach, and I just found out that Eileen Ivers is playing at Concerts Under the Stars on the first night of Shavuot! Dammit! Eileen is my absolutely favorite musical act to see live (yes, more than TMBG and more than Pearl Jam), and the Upper Merion park is probably my favorite place to see concerts.

If anyone can help me find a way to justify within my Jewish practices a way to see that concert, please let me know...Benj? Please?

For Shavuot:

It is designed to celebrate the first harvest.
We are no longer an agrarian society.
In fact, we aren't even a production society anymore.
These days, we're a service and entertainment society.
So legitimately, instead of celebrating harvest, one should celebrate service and/or entertainment.
Therefore, going to a concert is a good plan.
(Especially since it's outside.)

You're kind of on your own for Pesach, though.

Actually, for somewhat complicated reasons, I've been toying for a long time with skipping one of the two days of the holidays entirely, especially Shavuot. The problem is, I can only justify this for the second day, not the first.

At our Super Bowl party, at some point when there were fewer than two minutes left in the game, Dan spontaneously vowed to give up pork forever if the Eagles won. We were going to make him stick to it, too. He was pained, but he went along with it.

Even in retrospect, he said it would've been worth the tradeoff.

Personally, I don't really buy into the two day holidays anymore. It's antiquated. I'm prety sure we know the current date about as well as anyone in israel does.

I go to work on second days because:

1) see above.
2) limited vacation days
3) I forget.
4) I like making lists.
5) Am I off topic yet?

I hear that, especially since Shavuot is on the 50th day after the 15th of Nissan, rather than explicitly on the 6th of Sivan or whatever. (Further explanation of this ratty justification of mine in person, if you want.) I'm considering going to work on the second day. Trouble is, the concert's on the first night...

Very clever. I actually think that, given how easy it is for us to ignore agricultural events and constraints these days, it is even more important to celebrate these holidays. (Unless the latest HDTV spec has some Direct Rationing Mechanism that I haven't heard of.) But being outside for Shavuot makes lots of sense.

I think it works similarly to Store Customer Loyalty Cards. You just don't want to accidentally show your BJ's Membership card at CostCo... it's just embarrassing.
