Desh

It occurs to me that I'm rarely called Desh in person anymore. My new roommate (though not so new anymore, I guess) calls me Josh. My girlfriend calls me Josh. My coworkers and family have always called me Josh. The friends who call me Desh who I saw most frequently a year ago have left town. Some other friends who call me Desh, I see less often than I used to. Yet more friends sit on a board or an organizing committee with me, in which contexts I prefer to be called Josh, and some of them have taken to calling me Josh the rest of the time as well in order to alleviate confusion.

It remains to be seen if this ebbs and flows, or if the nickname is starting to go away after sticking with me for close to half my lifetime.

(For those who don't know, my policy on my nickname is that in social/casual contexts, people can call me either Josh or Desh; I have no preference. But I rarely introduce myself as Desh. My reason for that is mainly to see how the nickname can spread without me helping it along too much.)

I have a similar policy for my nickname. Mine is going away, too, though it's only had about 9 years of existence.

I have the same sort of thing going on with "Goob", except not as much. I expected it to disappear when I moved to Seattle, especially since my bf Alex hates the name... but there is a girl-Alex here, who I met at Falcon Ridge and she not only calls me Goob but she introduces me to other people as Goob and refers to me as Goob when she talks of me to them. So last week at a bar, a guy I barely know called me Goob. Aside from that crowd, Lisa also sometimes calls me Goob but she doesn't spread the Goob like Girl-Alex does.

On the East Coast, my sister Tina will always keep the name alive. She created it, after all.

I like that you're called Desh because it's a hell of a lot more unique than Josh. :) You're the only Desh I know!

by the way, when i talk about you in the third person, I now only use Josh, since I don't know how you relate to the mixed multitude in the room.

lol. not that often, but I do spend a good amount of time with your ex-roomie and other folks who know you.

I still refer to you as "Desh" or "JoshDesh" verbally, confusing Elise to no end.

Hm. That's interesting. I know all too many Joshes, which means that I refer to none of them as "Josh" in conversation, although some of them get called "Josh to their faces. You are just one of the lucky ones that gets something more interesting than a last name as a moniker.

You have a nickname?!? What is it?

[identity profile] msschein.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I thought you kindof wanted to phase out Desh. Or, at least, you seemed less enthusiastic about being called Desh last I saw you regularly. Are you sad to see it go?

You'll always be "Deshie-poo" to me. Jerk.

So I may call you Josh to your face, but sometimes I have to use Desh.

it goes like this:

Me: "Oh, so I'm dating Josh"
Them: who?
Me: last name.
Them: blank look
Me: Desh?
Them: OH!

yeah...
