My web host just upgraded the backend of the mail storage. They said that the change would be transparent to the users.

  • My mail was inaccessable for about 30 minutes.
  • After the change, all of my mail was marked unread. (I have about 4000 messages in my inbox, and about 450 of them were supposed to be unread.)
  • All of the messages were timestamped at the time of the changeover, rather than at the time they were originally received.
  • I haven't received any new mail since the changeover, including the test messages I've sent myself.

Luckily I realized there was a problem in time to back up my folders, so I've likely fixed problems 2 and 3. It would have been catastrophic had I not been able to do that. Seriously, I'd have been "off" for months.

But yay for budget hosting, eh?
